A 78-year-old woman is in the hospital after she was attacked and beaten with her walker by an intruder early Thursday morning, police said.

The woman was leaving her apartment at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of West 32nd South when a stranger approached and knocked her down, Lt. James Espinoza said. That’s close to Meridian and 31st Street South.

The intruder took the woman’s walker and hit her while she was on the ground, Espinoza said. He then forced his way inside and ransacked the apartment while the woman lay on the ground.

She eventually got up and asked her manager to call 911, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said.

Officers responding to the 911 call found the 28-year-old man asleep inside the residence and arrested him, Espinoza said.

“We do believe alcohol is a factor,” he said.

The victim was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph, where she was found to have a broken left shoulder and other injuries from the attack.
