Man who robbed businesses while children slept in getaway car is sentenced

A man who committed robberies while his young children slept in the back seat of the getaway car was sentenced to nearly five years in prison Friday.

Charles Emerson, 26, pleaded guilty on Sept. 25 in Sedgwick County District Court to one count of aggravated robbery and three counts of robbery, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said in a statement.

Emerson admitted robbing X-Citement Video at 3909 W. Pawnee, the QuikTrip at 2510 W. Pawnee and Petro America at 2838 W. Central in a 90-minute period on April 21. He was armed with a pistol for the robberies.

Emerson’s 10-month-old daughter and 5-year-old son slept in the car while he committed the crimes, Bennett said. Judge David Kaufman sentenced Emerson to 59 months in prison and ordered him to pay more than $1,100 in restitution.

Emerson’s girlfriend, Roxanne Egan, is scheduled to be sentenced in December on similar charges, Bennett said.
