Man sentenced to jail after knocking out groom at IHOP
A Wichita man has been sentenced to almost four years in prison after hitting a just-married groom at an east-side IHOP location last August.
Oliver Bradwell, 23, was sentenced Oct. 21 to 45 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated battery in July, according to a news release from District Attorney Marc Bennett.
Newly married Omar Galaviz-Hernandez and his bride, whose name was not provided, were eating at IHOP, 11855 E. Kellogg, the evening of Aug. 17, 2014. They were still in their wedding clothes.
Bradwell and three friends were sitting at a nearby table.
He dropped his ID on the floor, and Galaviz-Hernandez’s wife picked it up and returned it.
Bradwell then “made a derogatory comment toward the woman,” prompting Galaviz-Hernandez to tell Bradwell to “show some respect,” according to the release.
Bradwell then stood up and knocked Galaviz-Hernandez to the floor. Galaviz-Hernandez hit his head and was knocked unconscious. He had five stitches in his lip and three staples in the back of his head at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis.
After examining the restaurant’s surveillance footage, police identified Bradwell, a documented gang member, as the man who attacked Galaviz-Hernandez.
As part of 36 months of post-release supervision, Bradwell was ordered to pay more than $12,600 in restitution.
