Man shot while breaking into house near Valley Center

A man is in jail after he was shot while breaking into a house west of Valley Center on Sunday morning, authorities said.

The shooting was reported just after 8:30 a.m. in the 9400 block of West 73rd Street North, Sedgwick County sheriff’s Sgt. Conrad Jansson said. A bullet grazed the suspect, a man in his 30s, in the head.

The suspect was being loaded into an ambulance when Jansson said he arrived on the scene west of Tyler and just east of the Arkansas River, a few miles west of Valley Center. The suspect was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis for treatment of his gunshot wound, then interrogated upon his release.

He was then booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated burglary and other potential charges, Jansson said.

“He was trying to actively break into the house” when he was shot, Jansson said.

There were five people inside the house at the time of the incident — a man in his 40s, his wife and three children: 8, 5 and 6 months.

“At this point, it’s an ongoing investigation,” Jansson said. “The homeowner is not being booked into jail.”
