Wichita police are trying to figure out how a man received a critical head injury before he was found in a field near Newman University on Friday.

Wichita police Sgt. Jason Bartel said Newman’s campus security called police around 5:30 p.m. to check on a man lying in a field next to the Star Lumber & Supply Distribution Yard, in the 3500 block of West McCormick.

When they arrived, they found a man in his 40s with injuries to the face, Bartel said.

He was transported to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in critical condition, according to a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher.

Police had also received information that the man, as well as another man, might have been intoxicated, Bartel said.

Police were looking for a suspect in the area, described as a muscular, tattooed man in his 40s, Bartel said.

Bartel said there is no immediate danger to people living in the area.
