Police think drug debt led to shooting on South Broadway (+video)

Wichita police have four people in custody following a nearly five-hour standoff on South Broadway on Wednesday, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said.

The standoff occurred at an apartment building in the 3800 block of South Broadway.

One of the people in custody is a suspect in a shooting case on South Broadway on Tuesday night, in which he fired several shots at a car on South Broadway, police said Wednesday morning.

One of those shots hit a 42-year-old man in the back, critically injuring him, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said. Officers responding at about 7:20 p.m. to a report of shots fired at Oaks Kitchenette in the 3800 block of South Broadway learned en route that there was a shooting victim lying in the parking lot of Bill & Mary’s bar in the 4200 block of South Broadway, he said.

The shooting victim was one of five people inside a green Mitsubishi Montero sports car when a 33-year-old man emerged from a room at Oaks and started shooting, Espinoza said. The car was hit several times, and one person was wounded.

Investigators think the clash was “over a drug debt,” Espinoza said.

The driver of the car sped away as the shots were being fired, he said, and the victim was left in the parking lot a few blocks away. Police have talked to four of the five people in the car, but are still trying to find the remaining passenger.

“It is not gang-related,” he said.

The shooting victim is in critical condition.
