Police: Man’s crime spree ends with beating in Planeview house
A man’s crime spree ended in Planeview when his gun jammed and he was knocked out by a man he fired a shot at, police said.
The 40-year-old suspect, a documented gang member, is in a hospital suffering from suspected bleeding on the brain and will be jailed upon his release, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said.
The suspect is linked to a crime spree Monday before his attempted robbery of a family in Planeview, Espinoza said. He is thought to have stolen a black Chevy truck from the 600 block of North Emporia at about 11 a.m., then damaged a garage door during a confrontation with his ex-wife in the 700 block of North Golden Hills at about noon.
At about 1:30 p.m., he fired a shot outside a house in the 3400 block of South Roseberry, then forced his way inside, Espinoza said. The suspect demanded money from a 40-year-old man in the house and fired a second shot.
The resident fled to a back bedroom as a woman and three children hid, Espinoza said, but the suspect was able to push his way into the back room. He fired a third shot, but the gun jammed.
At that point, the resident attacked the suspect and beat him until he lost consciousness. Police arrived, took the suspect into custody and recovered the firearm, Espinoza said.
“He’s looking at numerous charges” once he’s released from the hospital, Espinoza said of the suspect.
People in the house when the 40-year-old forced his way inside included a 30-year-old woman, an 11-year-old boy and girls ages 10 and 8. They were not injured.
The man targeted in the Planeview house is not a gang member, Espinoza said.
