Man hospitalized after being shot in chest on South Hydraulic

A man has been hospitalized following a shooting Thursday evening in the 800 block of South Hydraulic in Wichita.

A Sedgwick County dispatcher said the shooting was reported at an apartment complex at 5:56 p.m. The injured person was transported to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in critical condition, the dispatcher said.

The man called 911 to report he’d been shot in the chest while walking in the 800 block of South Hydraulic, Wichita police said.

Wichita police Lt. Dennis Wilson said the man, in his 20s, indicated he was headed back to Bradford Glen apartments, 888 S. Hydraulic, from a nearby business when someone fired at him. He told police he continued walking to an apartment where he sometimes stays and called 911 from inside.

The man was transported to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, a Sedgwick County dispatcher said. He was in critical condition, Wilson said, but was awake and able to talk to officers.

Wilson said police think one or two rounds were discharged, though as of early Thursday evening only one witness – a person inside the apartment with the man – had reported hearing gunshots.

Police had no suspects early Thursday evening. Officers were using flashlights to search the ground for blood and shell casings, Wilson said, but had found nothing by 7 p.m. They were searching along Hydraulic between Lincoln and Gilbert.
