Man, 51, injured in crash after police pursuit

A 51-year-old man was injured Tuesday evening after the car he was driving struck a utility pole following a brief police chase, Wichita police said Wednesday.

Police attempted to stop a 1997 Saturn about 6:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Hillside because the car had been reported stolen, Lt. James Espinoza said.

After the driver kept going at a high rate of speed, a police supervisor called off the pursuit, Espinoza said.

The vehicle struck a utility pole at nearby Murdock and Cleveland and overturned, pinning the driver inside. He was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in serious condition, Espinoza said.

The incident came after another law enforcement chase earlier Tuesday that also involved a reported stolen vehicle.

A Sedgwick County sheriff's deputy’s pursuit of the vehicle was called off shortly before 8:30 a.m. The vehicle was involved in a crash at George Washingon Boulevard and Pawnee, injuring four people.

Tuesday evening’s pursuit was ended quickly, Espinoza said.
