Wichita police plan sobriety checks, but won’t say when or where

The Wichita Police Department will hold a sobriety checkpoint sometime this weekend within the city limits.

The department is not disclosing specifics about its exact time and location, agency spokesman Lt. James Espinoza said. It will be open sometime between Friday and Sunday.

Officers plan to stop motorists and check driver’s licenses, proof of insurance and seat belt usage, according to a news release from the city.

Those not following the law or suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be detained and evaluated.

Most motorists should experience only a brief delay, the city said.

The checkpoint is coordinated and worked in partnership with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Sedgwick County Emergency Management Services and the DUI Victim Center of Kansas.
