More than $226,000 awarded to victims of violent crime

The Kansas Crime Victims Compensation Board last week awarded $226,783.71 to 250 victims of violent crime at its September meeting.

The awards, which help pay for unforeseen expenses arising out of violence, were given in 114 new cases and 136 cases previously submitted to the program, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.

Eligible crime victims can receive up to $25,000, including up to $5,000 for funeral costs; $5,000 for outpatient mental health counseling; $10,000 for inpatient mental health treatment; and $1,500 for grief counseling for families of homicide victims.

The money for the awards comes from court costs, fines and restitution paid by convicts, as well as inmate wages and parole fees.
