A standoff in southeast Wichita ended Monday night when the suspect, a man in his mid-20s, surrendered peacefully to police.

Police were called to the 4600 block of East Boston at around 4 p.m. on Monday to deal with a potential hostage situation, said police Lt. Jeff Allen, bureau commander of Patrol East.

A 911 caller indicated a shot had been fired in the residence, just to the northwest of Harry and Oliver, police said.

SWAT units were called to the scene, and Boston and Pershing streets were cordoned off for about five hours.

After SWAT teams made contact with the man inside, they were able to negotiate the release of another man in his mid-20s. Police are unsure of the relationship between the two men but think they could have possibly been roommates.

A couple of hours after the release of the second man, SWAT team members were able to persuade the suspected armed man to come out of the residence and surrender peacefully, Allen said. The standoff was declared over at around 9 p.m.

Residents in the immediate area were evacuated and moved to a makeshift shelter, he said. By 10 p.m., all streets were unblocked and residents were able to return to their homes.

Police think a shot was fired in the residence but are working on obtaining a search warrant to investigate further, Allen said.

No injuries were reported.

Police are expected to release more information at a 10 a.m. briefing Tuesday.
