Man gets 27 months in prison for his part in fatal 2013 shooting

The second of two men convicted in connection with a fatal shooting at a North Broadway fourplex in 2013 was sentenced Wednesday to 27 months in prison, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said.

Jeremy Anspach, 38, was originally charged with second-degree murder in 23-year-old Eric Salazar’s death, but he pleaded no contest to lesser counts of aggravated assault and obstruction apprehension or prosecution in June.

Prosecutors said Anspach drove Manuel Rivas to Salazar’s apartment at 1835 N. Broadway on Nov. 6, 2013, and guarded the door while Rivas confronted Salazar with a gun.

Rivas, according to court documents, shot Salazar in the head after a struggle over the weapon. Anspach then helped him flee.

Court records say Anspach knew Rivas wanted to argue with or scare Salazar that night but did not intend to kill him or know of Riva’s plan to kill him. An argument over a small amount of money prompted the shooting, Wichita police have said.

Rivas, 25, was sentenced last week for his role in the killing. He will serve more than 33 years in prison.
