Taxi driver robbed after bringing two teens from Liberal to Wichita

The cab driver drove all the way from Liberal with two young women in the back seat, only to be robbed in Wichita after they reached their destination, police said.

The 55-year-old cab driver said the women, ages 17 and 18, paid a $350 fare for the ride from Liberal, Lt. James Espinoza said. Once they arrived in Wichita shortly before midnight Monday – a trip of about 200 miles – they directed the driver to take them to the 1600 block of North Madison. That’s northwest of 13th and Grove.

Once they arrived on Madison, the cab driver said, a man wearing a white mask approached and robbed him at gunpoint. The robber stole $500 and the driver’s wallet, striking him in the head before running down an alley, Espinoza said.

Much of the money stolen was the fare the two women paid to get to Wichita, he said. The driver suffered a minor injury from the assault.

Officers investigating the case found the mask and other clothing items.

Investigators “believe the girls knew the suspect,” Espinoza said.

“We believe it’s definitely suspicious,” he said.

The women were interrogated, Espinoza said, but they have not been arrested. The case remains under investigation.
