Mother of slain Arkansas City toddler charged with murder

The mother of a 16-month-old girl found dead in her Arkansas City home last week was charged with first-degree murder in Cowley County District Court on Monday.

Lindsey Abegg, 29, and her boyfriend, Jacob Brickey, 27, were each charged with murder in the death of the child, Cowley County Attorney Christopher Smith said in an e-mail response to questions.

Police responded to the report of a medical emergency at the MeadowWalk Apartments in Arkansas City on the afternoon of Aug. 18. They discovered the toddler deceased at the residence.

Two other children – a 6-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl – were also in the house when officers arrived, authorities have said. They were placed into protective custody with the state Department of Children and Families.

Abegg and Brickey are next due in court at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. A preliminary hearing date has not yet been set, Smith said.

The couple is being held in jail without bond. Authorities have not released how the child died, though the charge against both defendants is first-degree murder in the commission of an abuse of a child.

Brickey is not the biological father of the slain toddler, authorities have said.
