A Wichita man has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison for leaving a woman dying on the side of the road after she fell out of his moving car.

Johnny D. Moore, 37, was ordered Thursday to serve 130 months in connection with the death of 30-year-old Chapre Dashae Cole, Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Lyndsee Stover said. He was found guilty at his May trial of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident where he knew someone had been injured or died.

Judge Kevin Mark Smith handed down the sentence.

Court records say Cole fell out of the front passenger window of Moore’s car around 10 p.m. on Aug. 7, 2023, while they were driving in the area of 47th Street South and Broadway. Witnesses saw Moore stop and get out of the car after Cole fell. He held her and pled for help before carrying her to a patch of grass, where he performed chest compressions on her, witnesses reported.

But then he got up and drove away before police arrived, court records say.

When officers tracked Moore down, he claimed Cole had jumped out of his car after she got mad while they were arguing and he didn’t do anything wrong.

But prosecutors contended Moore had acted without regard for Cole’s safety when he accelerated and made a wide right-hand turn, knowing she was trying to get out of his vehicle.

He was also intoxicated, with a blood-alcohol concentration estimated between .098 to .161, at the time, court records say.

Cole died in the hospital from head injuries on Aug. 11, 2023, four days after she fell.

Her obituary describes her as a Wichita South High School graduate who went on to work at Cessna and a mother of four who “would go to any length to make sure her children were happy.”

“She was a very loving, strong, and cheerful person, with a heart of gold. ... She was the type of person to always keep you laughing and keep you going,” her obituary says.
