A man accused of shooting another on Tuesday morning has been hospitalized in critical condition after eating a bag filled with an unknown substance while being arrested.

The shooting victim, a 51-year-old man, was taken to a hospital in critical condition after being found with a single gunshot wound in the 2300 block of North Jackson, a release from the Wichita Police Department said. He is expected to survive, the release said.

Police then identified and located the suspected shooter’s vehicle using Flock license plate reader technology, and officers with the Violent Crime Response team contacted him. At the time of his arrest he had a firearm in his possession, the release said.

As officers were taking the man into custody, the release said, “he ingested an unknown substance in a small bag.”

As the man was being taken to a hospital by Sedgwick County EMS, he became unresponsive.

He was hospitalized in extremely critical condition, the WPD confirmed. The department is actively seeking additional information related to the shooting; anyone with tips is encouraged to contact investigators at 316-268-4407 or online, or leave a tip anonymously via CrimeStoppers at 316-267-2111.
