Inmate dies in his cell while in custody at El Dorado prison
An inmate died at the El Dorado Correctional Facility on Friday, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
Joshua Matthews, 38, was found unresponsive in his cell Friday night, the department said, and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The cause of death was still pending as of Saturday, the department said, with an autopsy yet to be performed.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation into Matthews’ death.
Matthews was serving a sentence of slightly more than 20 years after being convicted on three counts related to battery on corrections employees in Douglas County.
