Four people, including a teenager, have been arrested and are accused of using a gun to threaten several people in the Oaklawn neighborhood and then returning the next day and firing several times in a drive-by shooting.

Deputies were first called to the 5100 block of South Meadowview a little after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, a spokesman with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a press release. Witnesses told deputies that a speeding silver van nearly hit an adult who was walking with five other people, including three children.

“After a woman yelled at the driver to slow down, a verbal altercation began and one of the van’s occupants displayed a firearm,” the press release said.

No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported, the sheriff’s office said.

Five hours later, around 1:08 a.m. on Wednesday, deputies responded to the neighborhood again, this time after reports of a drive-by shooting. A deputy patrolling nearby said he heard gunshots before seeing a silver van going southbound on Meadowview.

Several spent shell casings were found near a home on Meadowview, but no injuries were reported, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies said they identified the vehicle and noted that it was “connected to individuals involved in prior cases.” They found out where those individuals lived —an apartment complex in the 4200 block of South Hydraulic — and found a silver van.

In the van, deputies found six people, including a 17-year-old boy, a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old, as well as a 9mm handgun, multiple magazines, marijuana and alcohol.

The 17-year-old driver was arrested and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, possessing alcohol as a minor and child endangerment.

A 23-year-old woman, the mother of the two children, is accused of aggravated child endangerment, furnishing alcohol to a minor, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both of her children have been placed into protective custody.

A 19-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were also arrested on suspicion of aggravated child endangerment and criminal discharge of a firearm. The 21-year-old was also accused of providing alcohol to a minor.

The Wichita Eagle does not name people who have been arrested unless they are formally charged by the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
