Investigation underway after money reported stolen from Newton athletic club
Officials in Harvey County say they’re investigating the possible theft of funds belonging to the Newton Mexican American Athletic Club.
Nothing other than money was reported stolen, said Erin McDaniel, director of communications for the city of Newton.
“Police are working with board members and their bank to determine the extent of the theft,” McDaniel said in an email. “... We are still investigating the timeframe and amount that was taken.”
McDaniel said the theft was reported to authorities on Thursday.
“The investigation is in very early stages, and more information will be released as it becomes available,” she wrote.
The club, in a statement posted on Facebook on Friday afternoon, said it “took immediate action to address the situation and secure all remaining assets” after discovering that “organizational funds were misappropriated by an individual.” The club is working with Newton police, the post said.
“This situation is deeply disappointing and does not reflect the values or mission of NMAAC,” the club said in the post. “For decades, the organization has existed to serve the community, celebrate culture, and support the long-standing tradition of men’s fastpitch softball in Newton.”
The club hosts an annual men’s fastpitch softball tournament. The event, in its 78th year, will be held from July 3-5 at Athletic Park, 700 W. First St. in Newton.
“Despite this setback, planning continues for the 78th Annual Men’s Fastpitch Softball Tournament. The committee remains focused on delivering a meaningful and successful event for players, families, and supporters,” the club said.
