DUI hit-and-run killed Wichita mother of three. Jurors convict driver
A Sedgwick County jury has convicted a Wichita man of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a deadly accident in connection with a crash that killed a mother of three in 2023.
Jurors delivered the guilty verdict on Thursday, court records show. Dalton Wayne Huffman, 32, is scheduled for sentencing on June 26.
Prosecutors tried Huffman this week in connection with the November 2023 death of 24-year-old Anastasia Carter of Wichita. In an interview with The Eagle after her daughter died, Teresa Dear said Carter went to the store for ice on the night before Thanksgiving but never returned. Family who went to find her saw the crash, she said at the time.
Wichita police have said Carter was driving north on Ridge Road near Central on Nov. 22, 2023, when a southbound truck made a lefthand turn in front of her around 10:20 p.m. She died in the hospital a few hours later, records show.
A probable cause affidavit says Huffman initially stopped after colliding with Carter and got out of his truck to check on her but left because he “freaked out” when he didn’t see her moving.
He told police he started drinking alcohol earlier in the day after fighting with his girlfriend and had consumed 18 beers and one shot before the wreck, according to the affidavit.
Carter was a stay-at-home mother to three girls and wanted to pursue a career in nursing, The Eagle has reported.
