Wichita police have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with a shooting in a neighborhood south of downtown.

The shooting, which happened early Monday morning in the 1000 block of South Wichita, injured a 40-year-old woman. The address is near Lincoln and Broadway.

The Eagle does not name crime suspects unless they are formally charged in court.

Police say officers responding to the 1500 block of South Seneca around 3:50 a.m. Monday found the woman with several gunshot wounds. Investigators determined she was shot in the 1000 block of South Wichita by the man, whom she knows, police said.

The woman was hospitalized in critical “but stable condition,” Wichita police said in a news release.

“Investigators worked quickly to obtain a search warrant for the residence on South Wichita Street, and the WPD SWAT unit was activated due to the suspect being armed and dangerous,” the release says. “SWAT cleared the residence, but the suspect was not located. An arrest pickup was issued for the suspect, and at about 4:53 p.m., officers located the suspect and took him into custody without issue.”

Police didn’t say why the man shot the woman. Anyone with additional information about the shooting is asked to call Wichita police investigators at 316-268-4407 or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.

The man was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated battery, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal threat and criminal damage to property. He’s also being held in connection with a domestic battery case, records show.

“The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for charging consideration,” the release says.
