KBI investigates after fatal police shooting in Hutchinson
A state law enforcement agency is investigating the death of a woman who was shot and killed by police Sunday night after she allegedly pointed a rifle at homes and then at officers in a northern Hutchinson neighborhood.
The Hutchinson Police Department received a report at 9:11 p.m. that an armed woman was walking in the neighborhood of N. Adams St. and W. 28th Ave., a press release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said. According to the reports, she was pointing a firearm at homes in the residential area near Morgan Elementary School.
Four responding officers found and spoke with 50-year-old Cassondra Scott of Hutchinson, who was walking in the street.
“Preliminary information indicates at 9:20 p.m., after making contact with Scott, she pointed the rifle at the officers, prompting one officer to fire multiple times, striking Scott,” the KBI press release read.
Scott was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and later Ascension Via Christi St. Francis where she was pronounced dead. No officers were injured during the altercation, the state law enforcement agency said, and a pellet rifle was recovered from the scene of the shooting.
Hutchinson police then requested the assistance of the KBI and the Crime Scene Response Team, the press release read. They’ll conduct a preliminary investigation, gathering and assessing collected evidence and witnesses statements to then present to the Reno County District Attorney. The DA will determine if charges will be filed against the involved officers.
