Updated: Police said Tuesday morning on Facebook that the dogs involved in the attack were found and taken to the local animal shelter.

“This remains an active investigation. We appreciate the community’s assistance and cooperation in helping locate the animals,” the post says.

Original story: A child was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition after she and her mother were attacked by dogs Monday morning. The child was bitten, authorities said.

Emergency scanner traffic indicates the child is a 5-year-old girl. Authorities received a 911 call shortly before 9 a.m. in the 1500 block of South Topeka, just north of Harry. The person who called 911 reported that a woman and child had been attacked.

The child had injuries to their chest and upper arm, according to emergency scanner traffic.

Wichita police said Monday afternoon that the mother and child were attacked by two dogs, which were last seen around 1400 S. Topeka. Animal Control and police officrs are searching the area for the canines and are asking the public to call 911 if they see them or know their owners.

Police posted a community alert that included photos of the dogs on Facebook on Monday afternoon.

“This is an important example of why ensuring your animals are secure and in compliance with city ordinance. Dogs are required to be contained via leash, secure fence, or tether when outside. Microchips are required,” the post said.

The mother and child were treated for injuries at the hospital, police said.
