A detective with the Wichita Police Department suffered a serious injury to his face while police were arresting a teen suspected of stealing a car.

Around 7:10 a.m. Tuesday a 911 caller reported that a light blue Mercedes-Benz C300 had been stolen after it had been left running to warm up, a press release from the Wichita Police Department said.

A police detective found the vehicle at a motel north of downtown in the 1400 block of N. Broadway and patrol officers were called in to conduct a traffic stop.

“When officers attempted to arrest the suspect, he resisted,” the WPD press release read. “During the arrest, a detective suffered a serious injury to his face.”

The detective was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 18-year-old accused of stealing the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, felony theft and resisting an officer, the press release said. The Eagle does not name suspects of crimes unless they have been formally charged.
