16-year-old arrested after fatal shooting of another teen near Wichita park

Wichita Police Department

A 16-year-old boy is in police custody after another 16-year-old was found dead inside a vehicle near W.B. Harrison Park on Sunday evening.

The report of a shooting near the 1100 block of South Webb was made around 9:10 p.m., Wichita police said in a press release Monday afternoon.

Officers said a 911 caller at a nearby apartment complex saw a sedan jumping curbs and rolling in reverse before coming to a stop on a curb on South Webb, according to Sedgwick County Emergency Communications 911 scanner traffic. Information from scanner traffic is based on preliminary information and subject to change.

Police found a teen boy inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound, public information officer Kris Gupilan said during an on-scene media briefing.

The boy was taken to a hospital, Gupilan said, where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary information indicates the teen and another person were in the parking lot of the park before the shooting, Gupilan said. W.B. Harrison Park is just north of Harry and Webb and adjacent to Fox Run Apartments.

After the shooting, Gupilan said, the suspected shooter was seen running south and east through the park and away from the vehicle.

Police were able to identify a suspect based on “processed evidence and followed leads,” and arrested a 16-year-old boy, the department said in the news release Monday. He has since been booked into the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Investigators are still seeking information related to the shooting; tips can be called in to Wichita police investigators at 316-268-4407 or submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
