A pedestrian was killed and a driver was critically injured in a collision in south Wichita on Wednesday night, police said.

The crash happened while 55-year-old Tyrone Carter of Newton was walking across the street in the 1200 block of South Topeka just before 10 p.m., a press release from the Wichita Police Department said.

Preliminary evidence gathered by police suggests Carter was walking in the street when the 21-year-old driver of a white Ford Focus struck him while going south on Topeka. The Focus then hit a parked vehicle and came to a stop.

The 21-year-old driver was found inside his car and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police found Carter lying in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said alcohol and speed are suspected contributing factors in the crash.

The 21-year-old, who the department said was admitted to the hospital under police watch and custody, will be booked on suspicion of second-degree murder upon his release from the hospital, a WPD press release said.
