Employee killed in parking lot shooting at American Legion in Wichita, police say
An employee of American Legion Post 273, near 13th and Hydraulic, was fatally shot Monday night, Wichita police said.
It’s the third shooting there – and second killing – in less than a year.
The 56-year-old victim, Darnell Guiden of Wichita, was taken to a local hospital after the shooting, which was reported at 7:35 p.m. He was pronounced deceased at 7:57 p.m. He was found shot inside a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck in the parking lot, police said.
The suspect, a 40-year-old Wichita man, “called 911 and reported that he had just shot an individual,” stayed on scene and was arrested without incident on suspicion of first-degree premeditated murder and criminal discharge of a firearm, police said. He had “previously been banned from the business from a previous incident,” police said.
Police were still investigating what led to the shooting and the connection between the men, police spokesperson Rick Pena said at the scene.
Arrest records list the suspect’s address as a motel on Kellogg.
There were also a shooting at the legion on April 5, 2025, and a fatal shooting on Oct. 9, 2025.
