19-year-old identified in fatal car crash, shooting along Kellogg in Wichita
A 19-year-old man is dead and a young woman remains hospitalized in critical condition after a high-speed chase and shooting along Kellogg in Wichita on Sunday night.
The incident unfolded in the 7500 block of West Maple, when Alonso Loya-Rodriguez, a 19-year-old Wichita man, confronted a 24-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man, also of Wichita, The two were sitting together in a vehicle, Wichita Police Department chief information officer Andrew Ford said in a statement.
The woman and the 18-year-old passenger left in her car and “the 19-year-old suspect began chasing them at high rates of speed” in another vehicle, Ford wrote.
“While chasing, the 19-year-old suspect made contact with the victim’s car and fired multiple gunshots at the victims, striking the woman while driving,” Ford wrote in an email to The Eagle.
Still driving at high speeds, the two vehicles left eastbound Kellogg and went southbound on South Greenwich. In the 1400 block the 19-year-old crashed into a power pole just before 11 p.m., Ford wrote. Loya-Rodriguez was declared dead at 11:15 p.m.
The 24-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being shot in her lower torso. She is expected to recover. The 18-year-old passenger was not injured.
