State and local authorities are investigating after a 19-year-old McPherson man was shot and killed on a rural road following a dispute at a house party.

The incident began Saturday, Jan. 31, when attendees of a house party near Inman, a city of fewer than 2,000 residents, about 16 miles northeast of Hutchinson, got into a disagreement, according to a Facebook post from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Fueled by alcohol, the investigative agency said, two groups or partygoers left in separate pickup trucks. They met around 2 am. on a rural road, near 4th Avenue and Arapaho Road, about two miles from the party.

That’s when two men — including 19-year-old Joshua Soden of McPherson — began fighting. During the fight, Soden was shot and killed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect turned himself in to police.

“The 18-year-old male who shot Soden called 911 to report the incident,” the KBI Facebook post read. “He then drove to the Inman Police Department, where he was questioned by police, but has not been arrested.”

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is collaborating with the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office to investigate what happened before the shooting.

On Saturday, the state bureau said several witnesses had been interviewed, and there is no risk to the community.
