A 25-year-old Wichita man has been arrested after a Monday night stabbing in the Delano neighborhood left one person dead.

Wichita Police Department Public Information Officer Rick Pena said police responded to a disturbance around 8:40 p.m in the 400 block of West Maple on Monday night.

It was there police found 28-year-old Jon Berkenmeier suffering from several stab wounds. While care was provided at the scene, Berkenmeier died as a result of his injuries.

Police detained a 25-year-old man that night and later arrested him on suspicion of second-degree murder. While investigators haven’t disclosed what happened leading up to the stabbing, Pena said the two men were acquainted with each other.

“There was an argument,” Pena told members of the media on Monday night. “We’re not going to go into details, but there was two individuals and they are known to each other.”

Pena also noted that a Wichita Police drone was the first unit to arrive on the scene, and provided invaluable real-time information to officers.

The investigation is still in its early stages, Pena said, and the department is asking for information related to the incident. Tips can be left with Wichita Police investigators at 316-268-4407 or given anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
