Armed suspect shot in east Wichita home robbery; two suspects at large

A 22-year-old suspect in an armed home invasion robbery is hospitalized after being shot multiple times, Wichita police said.

He is in police custody and in serious but stable condition.

Two other suspects remain at large, police said.

Around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, gunshot sensors alerted police about shots fired in the 5300 block of East Funston, which is near Oliver and Harry. They found the suspect outside a home, shot multiple times.

Officers rendered first aid, and EMS took the man to the hospital.

A news release from police says that the technology alerting them of the gunshot increased response time, which “potentially saved the suspect’s life.”

Once he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault.

A 21-year-old Wichita woman was at her home in the 5300 block of East Funston when “three armed suspects kicked in the door and robbed her,” police said.

Shortly after, her boyfriend, a 23-year-old Wichita man, and his 22-year-old friend arrived. As the boyfriend approached the home, a suspect came out the front door, pointed a gun at him and ordered him to the ground.

“A struggle over the firearm followed,” police said.

As the friend got out of the vehicle, “an exchange of gunfire occurred” and the suspect was shot, police said. The other two suspects fled.

The three victims were originally detained while officers investigated what happened before they were all released.
