Man, 72, dies after he is found unresponsive in Sedgwick County Jail clinic
A 72-year-old inmate at the Sedgwick County Jail died Sunday morning after deputies found him unresponsive in the facility’s clinic.
The man’s name is being withheld at the request of his family, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Branden Stitt said by email. His is the sixth in-custody death at the jail this year.
“An autopsy will determine the cause of death,” the email said.
Stitt said the deputies discovered the man in distress shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday.
“Detention staff and on-site medical personnel immediately began life-saving measures. Sedgwick County EMS and the Wichita Fire Department responded, and EMS transported him to a Wichita hospital,” according to the email. “Doctors pronounced him dead shortly after 11 a.m.”
The jail said the man had “chronic medical conditions, including a brain tumor and hypertension, among other ailments.”
Earlier this month, on Nov. 8, he was hospitalized for treatment of acute kidney failure and returned to the jail after his discharge on Nov. 11.
At that time, he was “admitted to the on-site medical observation unit (at the jail) under close clinical monitoring,” according to Stitt’s email.
“The Sheriff’s Office notified the Kansas Bureau of Investigation per protocol, and detectives are conducting a full investigation.”
The man had been in custody since Nov. 6 for criminal threat and domestic battery, Stitt said.
