A 33-year-old Newton man died after he was hit by a car early Sunday on K-15 just south of MacArthur.

The man, who has been identified as Nicholas Wade Garcia, died at a Wichita hospital where he was taken for treatment, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that a Toyota Camry driven by a 22-year-old Wichita woman was traveling south on K-15 when it struck the man, who was in the roadway. The man was not in a crosswalk, and the reason he was in the roadway remains under investigation,” the news release says.

A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputy came across the collision around 12:33 a.m.

“The deputy immediately began life-saving measures while Sedgwick County EMS and Sedgwick County Fire District 1 responded to the scene. The victim was transported by EMS to a Wichita hospital, where he later died from his injuries,” according to the release.

The Sheriff’s Office says the 22-year-old woman stopped immediately after hitting the man. Authorities don’t think she was impaired at the time.

“This incident remains under investigation by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Team,” the news release says.
