$5,000 reward offered for information on fatal shooting at Wichita park
Wichita police are asking the greater Wichita community for help in identifying the suspect in a fatal shooting at Dr. Glen Day Park last week.
Travon Stewart, 32, was found by an off-duty detective near the Dr. Glen Day Park parking area just after 7 p.m. Thursday with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, police said. The park is near 27th and Hillside.
Stewart was selling concessions at the park for a football team unaffiliated with the Wichita Junior Football League, which was hosting games at the time of the shooting, police said.
“We believe around 200 people were at the park between the games,” Lt. Donald Moore, commander of the Wichita Police Department homicide section, said during a news conference Tuesday morning. “That means someone may have heard, seen, or recorded something that could be a significance to this case.”
Stewart was taken in critical condition to a Wichita hospital where he died.
At the news briefing, Moore also announced that Crime Stoppers has offered a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the suspect’s arrest.
“If you were at the park that night, please tell us what you heard or what you saw,” Moore said. “If you took photos or videos, we need you to share those with us. If you heard someone talk about this after the fact, that information is important to us as well.
“Even if it feels small, it could be a detail that breaks this case. Violence has no place in our community, let alone at a youth sporting event, kids and families deserve to play without fear.”
Since Oct. 23, the night of the shooting, Moore said the department has only received three tips, and nothing that has led to any investigative leads so far. They think the suspect was wearing black clothing, but Moore said the department does “not have any information other than that.”
In response to the shooting, Park and Recreation Director Reggie Davidson said six police officers were at South High School this past weekend for their championship game. During Tuesday’s conference, he reiterated the importance of speaking up and ensuring spaces for youth remain safe.
“I think it’s very important that we get out to the community, if you see something, say something,” Davidson said. “We need to make sure that we have safe spaces for our young people to be able to go out and enjoy our parks and our places and not be in fear that there’s going to be a harm or danger. It’s not just protecting our parks, but protecting our communities, as well.”
Moore encouraged Wichitans to exercise awareness and not to be afraid to make a report.
“Be aware of your surroundings,” Moore said. “If you see something suspicious, even if you’re not sure, call (or) alert an officer, security guard that’s there, or other adults. That way we can come and investigate it.”
If you have any information, please call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111, you can remain anonymous. To remain anonymous and eligible for the $5,000 reward, you must call Crime Stoppers, or you can contact homicide investigators directly at 316-268-4181.
