Wichita police say a man has died following an industrial accident near downtown on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson Officer Rick Pena said a 50-year-old Wichita man had upper body injuries when police arrived on site in the 700 block of East Murdock around 8:11 a.m. The address, an aerospace processing business called the Metal Finishing Company, is near Santa Fe.

The man was operating a hydraulic press when a “piece of metal separated” and fatally injured him, Pena said by email. Emergency scanner traffic indicates he was struck in the chest.

“He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 8:36 a.m.,” Pena said. “The investigation is ongoing.”
