An 18-year-old Wichita man is back in jail after being arrested less than three hours following his release, after he reportedly bit his mother and then stabbed his uncle with a kitchen knife.

The man remained in Sedgwick County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.

Jail records show the man was released from jail at 1:12 a.m. Tuesday after being arrested on Sept. 20.

At 3:50 a.m., police were called about a stabbing at the suspect’s mother’s home in the 3000 block of South St. Paul, in southwest Wichita.

Here is what police say happened just hours after his release:

The suspect became upset over missing money and took his mother’s phone.

“When she attempted to retrieve it, he bit her, causing visible injury,” police spokesperson Rick Pena said in an email.

The 39-year-old woman left her home and called her 32-year-old brother, who came to the home. The suspect, meanwhile, armed himself with a kitchen knife and left the home.

“When the brother arrived, he attempted to de-escalate the situation by following the suspect through the neighborhood,” Pena said. “The two eventually met in the street, where the suspect jabbed the brother, causing a half-inch-deep puncture wound to the abdomen.”

The Wichita Eagle does not identify suspects in crimes until they are charged.

The man had been arrested on Sept. 20 in connection with three Wichita municipal cases: one in June for theft, another in July for criminal damage to property, and another from Sept. 20 for interference with police and a couple of charges related to a minor with alcohol and tobacco.

He has a bench trial for all of those cases set for Nov. 3.

He also has several juvenile convictions, including interference with police in 2024; battery and interference with police, and lewd and lascivious behavior in 2023; and battery in 2022.
