A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in one of Wichita’s fatal Labor Day shootings.

The man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of 23-year-old D’Andre Rubio of Wichita, according to a Wichita police media advisory.

The shooting happened shortly before 2 a.m. Monday near Douglas and Rock Island. A disturbance took place before the shooting, the news release said. The shooting is still being investigated.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan discussed Labor Day violence during Mayor Lily Wu’s media briefing on Thursday morning.

“To anyone who believes they can pick up a gun, knife or any weapon to settle a dispute or commit a crime in Wichita, understand this clearly: The Wichita Police Department will identify you, arrest you and hold you accountable,” Sullivan said. “Violence has no place in our city.”

Rubio’s death was the first of three shooting fatalities reported in Wichita on Labor Day. Sullivan said arrests have now been made in each of the three shootings.
