Suspect in crash that killed 14-year-old arrested, charged with second-degree murder
Wichita police on Friday afternoon arrested a 19-year-old suspect in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a 14-year-old boy earlier this week.
On Wednesday evening, police responded to a crash near Harry and Rock. According to a Police Department statement, the BMW that Gauge Brasher was driving struck a power pole and utility box. The collision forced the pole and box into 14-year-old Jackson Nzabonimpa.
Nzabonimpa, who was standing on the sidewalk, died at the scene.
According to the statement, a responding Kansas Highway Patrol trooper saw Brasher and the car’s 24-year-old passenger running from the scene. Both men were apprehended, and Brasher was admitted to the hospital for medical treatment. Brasher later left the hospital, but was found Friday afternoon and arrested. The passenger was released without charges.
Investigators believe speed and impairment were contributing factors in the crash.
Earlier Friday, the case was presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which charged Brasher with second-degree murder.
