Wichita police seek parolee in fatal shooting outside Wesley

A 47-year-old man who cut his ankle monitor is wanted in a fatal shooting that happened Monday night outside of Wesley Medical Center, police said Tuesday morning.

The hospital was also hit with gunfire during the shooting, police said.

Robert John Schoenberger Jr. is considered armed and dangerous, police said. They are asking anyone who knows anything about his whereabouts to call 911 and not approach him.

He appears to have been last arrested in Wichita in May and had an address at that time in the 500 block of Marcilene, which is near Kellogg and Edgemoor, according to arrest records sent out each morning.

Police were called to the shooting at 7:14 p.m. Monday.

A female driving a vehicle tried to get away from a man, who was in the passenger seat, and got out in front of Wesley, 550 N. Hillside, police spokesperson Andrew Ford said.

“The suspect, who was still inside of the vehicle, began shooting at the victim, which caused her to fall down in the middle of the intersection,” Ford said.

Ford said a “rolling disturbance inside of the vehicle took place” before she got out and was shot.

She was shot in the upper body and the hand. She was rushed into surgery but died, police said.

Schoenberger has seven convictions in Kansas, all in Sedgwick County, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.

Six of the offenses are from the late 1990s and early 2000s. There are three counts of theft and then one count each of arson, burglary and aggravated indecent liberties with a child between the ages of 14 and 16, KDOC records show.

His seventh conviction happened in Feburary 2022, for an offense that happened in Feburary 2017, on attempted solicitation of a child, KDOC records show.

He was released from prison into Sedgwick County in June 2024, KDOC records show. He has been arrested at least three times after KDOC warrants were issued, but none of those led to new prison sentences, records show.

This is at least the city’s 21st homicide so far this year, according to reports from police. There were 26 at this time last year.
