A 25-year-old Wichita man has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman he has young children with — and who were in the apartment when the stabbing occurred Thursday — the Wichita Police Department said Friday.

Police also identified the victim as 27-year-old Sinay Leon-Montoya of Wichita.

A friend of hers, a 25-year-old Wichita woman who was found injured outside of the apartment, remained hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police spokesperson Andrew Ford said.

The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated endangering of a child and two counts of kidnapping, according to jail records. He was arrested at his apartment in the 6800 block of Par Lane. He remained jailed Friday.

At 2:17 p.m. Thursday, Leon-Montoya called 911 from the 6300 block of West Kellogg to report a disturbance, Ford said.

“A language barrier made communication with dispatchers difficult. She then left that location and returned to the apartment, where the fatal stabbing occurred,” Ford said in a news release.

Police were called about a domestic disturbance at the apartment at 2:34 p.m. They found the woman wounded outside. Inside, they found the suspect and Leon-Montoya, who was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced deceased at 4:14 p.m.

This is at least the city’s 16th homicide so far this year, according to records from police. There were 25 at this time last year.
