Fatal shooting of man led to hours-long police standoff in east Wichita
One man was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff Sunday morning that was connected to a fatal shooting earlier in north Wichita, police said.
Police officers heard and responded to gunshots at 9:32 p.m. on Saturday in the area of 22nd and Hillside.
Officers found Jesus Aguilera, 36, who had been shot multiple times, near the intersection, Wichita police spokesperson Bradly Wright said Sunday afternoon.
Aguilera was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, Wright said.
Hours later, between 5 and 6 a.m. Sunday, police learned that a 36-year-old Wichita man involved in the fatal shooting was at a home in the 800 block of South Longfellow, in east Wichita.
Police went to the home and discovered that the man was barricaded inside. The SWAT team was called and tried to negotiate with him for seven hours.
“The suspect fired at WPD SWAT multiple times during the barricade. No officers were injured,” Wright said. “Eventually, chemical munitions were deployed and the suspect exited the residence.”
The suspect was taken into custody and was taken a hospital to be treated after being apprehended by a K9 officer. He will be booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault on an LEO and homicide charges after being released from the hospital, according to Wright.
Wright said Aguilera and the suspect knew each other and police are looking into the motive behind the shooting.
Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call WPD detectives at 316-268-4407 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
