A Wichita State University resident assistant has been charged with first-degree murder in the December death of her newborn girl.

Marissa Carol Fields of Olathe also faces a charge of aggravated abandonment of a child in connection with the child’s death. Bond was set at $100,000.

According to court documents, Fields intentionally neglected and abandoned the child.

Officers were sent Dec. 26 to a residence in the 11300 block of South Millview Road in Olathe, where they confirmed that the newborn had died. Fields told officers she had given birth to the child.

Fields has been a student at Wichita State since the fall of 2014, said Joe Kleinsasser, the school’s director of news and media relations. She was enrolled for the fall 2015 semester, Kleinsasser said.

According to a Residence Life document on the university’s website, Fields was the resident assistant on Floor B1 of Shocker Hall, specializing in health professions students.

Fields is scheduled to appear in Johnson County District Court on Aug. 20.
