Teen arrested after shots fired, helicopter pursuit and crash, police say
A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Haysville after reportedly firing at two people and then leading Wichita police and a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter on a pursuit, Wichita police spokesperson Brad Wright said.
The chase was called off before the suspect crashed the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer and ran on foot, Wright said.
“Multiple agencies collaborated to establish a perimeter, and the suspect was ultimately located and arrested,” he said.
He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, criminal discharge of a weapon, juvenile possessing a firearm and simple battery when he was taken into custody at 10:57 p.m. Tuesday in the 6400 block of South Sunnyside, near the northeast corner of Haysville.
Wichita police were first called at 9:03 p.m. Tuesday about shots fired in the 1600 block of South Hydraulic, near Harry. Someone had shot at a 17-year-old girl and 20-year-old man and battered one of the two before taking off, a police report says.
Six 9mm shell casings were found, the report says.
The girl and the teen arrested are known to each other, Wright said.
