Wichita officer fires gun after dog charges, police say; owner cited

.
.

A Wichita police officer on Thursday fired a round toward a German Shepherd that charged them when responding to a call about the dog not letting someone get out of their vehicle, according to Wichita police.

The dog was not hit.

“The owner was nearby and was cited for permitting an animal to run at large, not having a license for a dog, and not having the dog microchipped,” Capt. Aaron Moses said in an email, adding that municipal court will decide on the fine amount.

Police were called at 4:48 a.m. on Thursday to the 100 block of North New York, which is near Douglas and Hydraulic, about a person saying a vicious dog was keeping them in their vehicle, Moses said.

“As an officer exited their vehicle, the dog charged them in an aggressive manner. The officer discharged one round from their firearm toward the dog,” Moses said. “The round did not strike the dog, but did cause the dog to flee back to its residence.”
