Wichita police have identified the man fatally stabbed near downtown Wednesday as 55-year-old Daniel Aunquoe.

Both he and the 42-year-old man arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in his killing are homeless, police spokesperson Andrew Ford said Thursday.

The suspect was also arrested for theft, though police did not immediately say what was taken. The man was arrested at 300 North Main after leaving the area of 3rd and Broadway where Aunquoe was stabbed.

The suspect had a bandage on his face in his mugshot. Police say the two were in a “physical altercation” before the stabbing.

Officers were called about the stabbing at 12:30 p.m. at 3rd and Broadway.

“Two males at the corner, 3rd and Broadway, they’re fighting. One is jabbing a metal object at the other person,” according to Sedgwick County Emergency Communications. The suspect then ran to the northeast, the first responder said.

Officers had crime scene tape on the sidewalk in front of First United Methodist Church at that intersection. There were evidence markers in the grass and on the sidewalk.

The victim, who police say had an out-of-state ID, died at a hospital.

Anyone with information about the incident should call 911, detectives at 316-268-4407, the See Something Say Something hotline at 316-519-2282 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. Callers can remain anonymous with Crime Stoppers.

This is the city’s eighth homicide so far this year, according to reports from police. There were 18 at this time last year.
