A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy was sent to the hospital Monday evening with serious burns after an inmate allegedly threw scalding hot water at them, SCSO public information officer Branden Stitt said.

The incident was reported at 7:20 p.m. inside the Sedgwick County Jail.

“The deputy sustained serious burns and was transported by Sedgwick County EMS to a local hospital for treatment,” Stitt said. “Sheriff’s detectives are currently on scene and have launched an investigation.”

The sheriff’s office will provide more information on Tuesday, Stitt added.
