A shoplifting suspect fleeing off-duty Wichita police officers working as security at Walmart was hit by a vehicle while trying to cross Kellogg on foot Friday, police spokesperson Kristopher Gupilan said.

“An officer initiated a foot pursuit but discontinued the chase prior to entering the highway,” Gupilan said in an email. “The suspect continued across Kellogg and was subsequently struck by a vehicle.”

The incident happened at the Walmart on Kellogg in west Wichita. The suspect was taken to a hospital.

“Officers working a secondary employment assignment at the Walmart … were alerted to a possible shoplifting incident,” he said. “Upon making contact with the suspected individuals, the male fled the scene on foot, heading south toward Kellogg.”
