A Wichita man was released from jail, robbed a Walgreens and was arrested and booked into jail again — all on the same day, Newton police said.

Police were called at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday to an armed robbery at a Newton Walgreens at 1300 N. Main St. Store employees told officers that a man came in and said he had a gun. He fled south with an unknown amount of cash, the NPD said in a Sunday social media post.

Officers later noticed a man “acting suspiciously” several blocks away from the store. They found clothing and other items from the robbery in an alley nearby. They did not find a weapon on the man.

The 37-year-old man was arrested and booked into the Harvey County detention center. The man had been released from the detention center earlier the same day, according to the NPD.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and North Newton Police Department assisted in the investigation.
