A 25-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the death of a 7-year-old boy who died after being shot in the torso Sunday at a southeast Wichita apartment.

Police were called at 12:26 a.m. to a report of a shooting at an apartment in the 3700 block of E. Ross Parkway, in the Planeview United neighborhood. The caller reported that someone had been shot and that a child was bleeding.

Officers arrived and found Gunter suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. He was taken a to the hospital where he died from his injury, according to Moses.

Seven other children and multiple adults were inside the apartment and were interviewed by investigators. The children were taken and placed into protective custody.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our community,” WPD Chief Joe Sullivan said. “Incidents like this leave lasting scars — not only for the families involved but also for our first responders, emergency dispatchers, crime scene investigators, and medical professionals who work tirelessly to save lives. Our hearts go out to everyone affected. We remain committed to protecting Wichita’s children and ensuring that every child is safe in their own community.”
